Well, it's not that I'm pleased about bringing disappointing news, but, John has left ArenaNet about 2 years ago, you can find more information about it in his LinkedIn profile.

Wow such sad news There really is a lot of great people and information on this forum, It is sad to see things come to an end.
Is there no way to get the forum archived for now until everything is saved or a copy of the forum and database and move it to somewhere else?
"EDIT"
Is this any good for some of the backing up = http://www.httrack.com/

If you really want a COMPLETE backup of everything, that's actually quite easy and can be done by using one of the most basic Linux tools/commands there is: wget. With the right parameters, you can download an entire website.
It would download the files, images, threads, basicly everything. Even the ad code! It would simply download the website as you see it now in your browser.
All that is server side though, like logins and registrations, search would stop working.
About Guild Wars Legacy disappearing, well... that's something I have thought about and honestly that has been taken care of. It's still being set up, but I'll have a post up and running on GWL soon detailing this. But to keep it simple: as long as there's someone willing to cover the costs, it will stay up.

Goodbye everybody!
On a more serious note: Thanks everyone for the awesome times here, and I'm looking forward to continuing that awesomeness! So the Goodbye was fake
Amidst all this chaos and talk about which forum to pick yadda yadda, I urge you all to stop for a second and think: Was it the website or was it the community/members that made it so much fun?

Usually yes, but there were past moderators that did take advantage of their abilities to hide when they were wrong or when a poster was right about something game related. Nobody could really do anything about it because the assumption was from past experiences was that this site would automatically side with the moderator.

With as big as Curse is or was, you'd think they'd merge the databases after getting the forum's software to be the same and same version. I guess not and this should be expected to happen to all the other Curse forums later on.
Or at least archive it. There's just too much information that will be lost. Builds that don't exist on other sites, math as to why something is better, theories for current players to pick up and develop further, etc.
I mean I get time and work part of keeping a site up and desire for things to be streamlined for Curse, but this forum is way too developed and holding too much exclusive information/experiences.
No update if there's going to at least be an archive of some sort?

they are not using the same type of databases...guru uses vbulletin and guru2 uses something called IP board? not even remotely the same things (as we were told when they were going to merge us years ago). I think I remember them saying they were not compatible to merge.

They are very compatible to merge after this forum is converted to IP Board (Invision Power Board).

In theory yes.
But at this time they are unable (unwilling?) to transfer everything. I have heard tales of corrupt data.
It is this loss of knowledge that will be catastrophic, and why the legacy forum was born. We are working to save as much knowledge as possible.

There's no theory. People do it. I know it's more than simply brushing ones teeth, but it's something that's done.

Yep. You missed my point. They don't seem to want to. Of course it's different if the data really got corrupted I guess... But they don't seem interested in explaining either...

as I mentioned before....a few years ago Curse had wanted to move guru over to guru2...at that time they determined it was not possible due to whatever reasons (I had stopped listening when they said that ventari's could not and would not be moved--). So they kept both.
Fast forward to now, for whatever reason, they have decided to no longer upkeep guru and such. This does not change the fact that they had looked into moving guru over in the past and had nixed the idea (guru2 has gone thru a LOT of changes since then moving it even farther away from guru). If it has been 'easy' they would have done so back when.

It wasn't so much whether it was easy or not (it wasn't easy), it was just whether they could justify the cost of converting gw1g to IPB.
I'd be interesting in hearing why GW2G is "even further away from Guru."
